Last years in Persia

When Alexander discovered that many of his satraps and military governors had misbehaved in his absence, he executed a portion of them, on his way to Susa. Alexander wanted to show his generosity and thanks, so he paid off the debts of his soldiers, and announced that he would send those over-aged and disabled veterans back to Macedon under Craterus. his troops misunderstood and mutinied at the town of Opis and refused to be sent away. They criticized  his adoption of Persian customs and dress. Alexander executed the ringleaders of the mutiny but forgave the rank and file. After Alexander traveled to Ecbatana to retrieve the bulk of the Persian treasure, his closest friend Hephaestion died of an illness. He was very affected by this so Alexander sacked a near by town and killed all of the inhabitants by sword, as a sacrifice to his Hephaestion
s ghost.
