In 334 BC Alexander crossed the Hellespont with approximately 42,000 soldiers from various Greek city-states and mercenaries. After the victory over Persia at the Battle of Granicus, Alexander accepted the surrender of the Persian provincial capital and treasury of Sardis. Alexander waged many sieges and eventually forced his opponents to withdraw by sea. Alexander left the government of Caria to Ada, who adopted him as her son.
